For the first time in over 30 years, the UK inflation has reached an all-new high. The last inflation rate that was this significant was recorded 30 years ago at a rate of 6.2%. The UK inflation rate has risen to 7% this year. Although the rates are increasing, the wages aren’t, resulting in panic and concern across the UK. In this article, we will discuss why the prices are rising so quickly, how it’s affecting people and what you can do to reduce your expenditure. Why are prices rising so quickly? The main reason why prices have increased so dramatically is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. With Russia being one of the leading oil distributors and with the demand of oil being so high because of the invasion, the prices of oil have increased significantly. Even though the UK only imports 6% of its crude oil from Russia, the global impact that the invasion has had has forced prices to increase for everyone. How it’s affecting peopleThe prices have hit everyone hard; however, it has hit some people harder than others.Poorer families are in debates of whether they should put petrol/diesel in their car or put food on the table. This worrying time for families has put immense pressure on the government to help those in need. Rishi Sunak claims that “we are taking action to ease the burdens by providing support worth around £22bn in this financial year, including for the most vulnerable through our Household Support Fund”. What you can do Instead of driving a car that burns petrol, many will start switching to an electric car or even biking. This will not only help with ridding the cost of fuel, but it is also much better for the environment. If buying or exchanging your current car is too much of a drastic change, you can always try to drive as smoothly as possible, use higher gears and stick to the speed limit. This way, you’ll burn less fuel, saving you money.

With the rise of energy bills and fuel prices, a promotion sounds really good right now, doesn't it? Your colleagues have probably thought about going after one too.Luckily, if you want to climb a little bit higher on that illustrious career ladder and stand out from the crowd, there are some easy fixes to your current work-life that can help. 1. Let Your Manager KnowAn often overlooked but crucial task is letting your manager know that you want to be considered for a promotion. If you don't, your manager might consider someone else who is more vocal about their ambitions and they might not pay close attention to your achievements. But if you take a spare five minutes of your manager's time to let them know, they might be quite beneficial to your career journey. Any good manager will offer advice and guidance on your next steps and what they're looking for when it comes to promotion. There's absolutely no harm in letting them know, but there are plenty of benefits. 2. Keep Evidence Of All Your Hard WorkYou need to keep receipts. Whenever you've gone above and beyond in your current role or demonstrated desirable skills, write it down, screenshot your work and take photos. If you work in a customer-facing job, take a spare minute to ask your customer for a testimonial. Or ask for feedback from your colleagues. As you go, add it all to one big presentation and be ready to unleash it on the person in charge of promoting you. With a backlog of evidence, you'll be hard to refuse. 3. Be More ProactiveMake yourself more visible by taking on more tasks and offering your manager help. Take a spare five minutes at work to look for opportunities that demonstrate the skills you need for the promotion you want. Sometimes management will offer you tasks to see how you will thrive in that environment. So don't turn them down. But be mindful of taking on too much or taking on tasks that don't help your case for the promotion - this will lead to stress and burnout.Another option is to ask if there's any further training or skills you can learn that will be desirable for the promotion. A candidate with more skills and qualifications is always going to be more ideal than one who hasn't. 4. Bring In More RevenueThe reality is, you work for a business and the business hired you to make money whether directly or indirectly. Take a spare moment to evaluate how you make the company money and how you increase its revenue or save them money. Can you find a way to be more efficient or quicker? Or is there a way to cut costs and save the company money? Increasing the business' income increases your value to the business. How could a manager refuse a promotion if you're making them more money?5. Have The Right AttitudeIt really all begins with the right attitude. If you're optimistic, driven and motivated, you're showcasing yourself as the ideal candidate for the role. The added benefit to having a great attitude in the workplace is that positive energy is infectious. You'll be a great person to work alongside and all-around improve staff morale. You may even motivate and influence some of them to be the same. Such easy changes as offering yourself up for more tasks or just having a quick five-minute conversation with your manager can make all the difference when it comes to being considered for a promotion. But if you feel like you're doing all of these things and still not progressing in your automotive career, it may be time to switch companies. Are you in two minds whether you should leave your job or not? We'll help you identify if you should start looking for another job by listing the five signs that it's time to move on to better things. 1. You're Excessively ProcrastinatingThe biggest way to determine whether you should leave your job is by noticing if you procrastinate and how much if you do. If you procrastinate frequently and for long periods of time, it's a clear indicator that you should leave your job and pursue something more motivating. Excessive procrastination can come in many forms: avoiding work, prioritizing the wrong work and pushing mass amounts of workloads onto other people. 2. You're Not Learning Anything NewAsk yourself “am I learning anything new?”. If the answer is a definite no, you should take it as a red flag that you need to look for a new job. Jobs should be helping you grow and advance in your career.3. You’re Not Getting Enough Time OffWhen you feel as though you’re not getting enough time off for yourself, you can become rather resentful towards your job and employer. By allocating yourself enough time off in a contract, you can feel more comfortable, knowing that you can take a good amount of time away from your job and avoid burnout.4. You Feel UnappreciatedIf you’re questioning your role in the workplace then you’re probably finding that your job is making you feel uncomfortable. You may feel neglected through a lack of encouragement and praise. Having a job that makes you feel valued, it'll be more motivating. Don’t let your job affect your mental health negatively!5. You’re Missing Out On PromotionsWhen there's no job progression, it is tough to stay interested in your job role. Having opportunities to advance in your career will keep you motivated with something to aim for. Overall, if your job isn’t giving you that satisfaction of reaching targets and gaining promotions then look for a new job as soon as possible.6. You Get The Sunday ScariesWhen it comes to Sunday, do you feel a sense of dread for the next day? This is a huge red flag that you're in the wrong job. On average, we spend 90,000 hours at work. Life is too short to spend your time doing something you dread, right? How many signs have you checked off? A trial of a four day work week has been launched in the UK to measure whether employees are more productive with a three day weekend. This comes after a long debate over the benefits of having a long weekend. More businesses have been willing to try it out after countries like New Zealand, Iceland and Sweden have trialled it successfully. The UK trial will measure the productivity of around 30 businesses for a six month period. Employees will be paid the same but are expected to give 100% productivity 80% of the time. But will it actually work? Here's what was discovered from previous trials. It Cuts CostsOne of the obvious findings was that it cut costs. Where the office was closed for that extra day, energy bills dropped. Employers and employees saved money on lunch and commuting - which was also great for the environment. It Improves WellbeingWith the extra free time, employers were understandably happier. This leads to better-working environments and employees being more focused on their work.It Increases ProductivityThe biggest find was the massive increase in productivity. It seemed that with more free time, employees focused on their work more deeply when they were in the office.Microsoft Japan reported a huge 40% increase in productivity when they adopted the four day work week.It Reduces burnout & improves Employee RetentionOverall, with the increase in employee well being and more free time, employees called in sick less often and became more loyal to the business. It also encouraged more applicants to apply for the job when a position became available. Having the three day work week is still quite rare which makes the position more desirable. Of course, there were disadvantages to the four day work week too. Risking customer satisfaction was an issue when it came to response times. And for the companies open 24/7, like hospitals, not having enough staff to cover shifts were a big issue. For many, the pros outweighed the cons. Following the trial, many companies in Iceland and Sweden have already implemented the four day work week. Will this be the dawn of the four-day workweek in Britain?

What do you want your life to look like next year? Are you in the garden of your new build, having a bbq with your friends during that one week of English summer? Or maybe you’re in the middle of the countryside, alone except for your dog Paws - because you love nature and hate people. Whatever life you’re dreaming of, I can bet that your job will be a huge part of it. Next year, why not take a step closer to that dream life by landing your dream job with these six simple steps. 1. Write it DownIt may seem trivial but don’t skip this step! Writing down what you want narrows your focus and provides short-term motivation. So grab your 2022 diary or the notes on your phone and write down, what job you’re going to get this year.2. Make Your Goal SMARTWhen you write down your dream job goal, make it SMART. Make sure the job is specific. For instance, write “Paint Sprayer” not “Workshop Job”. Make it attainable. Don’t write CEO if you’ve no experience in the industry. And make sure that the job role you’ve chosen is relevant to the career you want. Here’s a template you can use;By (insert month) 2022, I will get a job as a which will further my career in (insert dream job). I will does this by (insert thing you will do to achieve the goal). If you want to learn more, you can read our blog post on SMART goals here. 3. Be PassionateThink about the job you’ve chosen. Do you REALLY, REALLY, really, REALLY want this job? Being passionate about the job role will keep you motivated through all the setbacks and rejections. It’ll get you sending your 1000th application when you’d rather be watching The Grand Tour. And it’ll cradle you to sleep after a long shift at that current job that you hate.4. Break It Up Into Smaller Goals Break your one goal of getting a new job into smaller bite-size goals. For instance, you could break it up into smaller goals like: Tailor CV to the job roleSpend an hour a day looking for available positionsPractise interviewing questions for two hoursPrepare interview outfitYou get the idea. Each task should be no longer than 3 hours long to complete. Breaking it down makes it easily “digestible” and prevents you from getting overwhelmed.5. Prioritise The TasksTake your list of smaller tasks and group them by priority. Tasks that need to be done immediately should be marked as first. Tasks that are important but don’t need to be done ASAP can be in the second group. And finally, the ones that you are helpful but not essential, you can shove them in the third pile. This is the order in which you need to do those small tasks. Do the first pile, first etc. Doing this will keep you from procrastinating on the tasks that don’t matter as much to your goal. 6. Add It To The CalendarNo one loves a deadline, but they do work. Put what date you will do your smaller tasks on and when you will complete them by. Then be prepared to feel the ultimate satisfaction when you tick them off your list. 5. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For HelpDon’t feel like you have to do this all on your own. Sharing your goals with friends and family can keep you on track and hold you accountable. Or you can reach out to a specialist like us (Autoskills) who can provide you with options and available vacancies. Asking for help can accelerate you to achieve your goals quicker than you thought possible.6. VisualiseOk, stick with me on this one. If you visualise yourself completing your goal, did you know that you’re more likely to achieve them? This has been proven in countless studies about the power of visualisation in chess players to Tiger Woods. Sit somewhere quiet, close your eyes and visualise yourself getting the job. Sooner or later, it will become a reality. After you’ve written down your goal, broken it down into smaller goals and followed the rest of the steps, you’ll be on the right path to success. All you need to do is start and it won’t be long before you land the dream job. And if you need a little help getting into the automotive business, get in touch. We’re always here to help you find your dream job.
